The Role of the Human Spirit

Lance Armstrong is a very strong athlete. His post-cancer attitude is one that is respected and even awed. He is a man that has an unquenchable spirit that demands to be fed. His love for cycling is one that is only matched by his love for recovery.

And I think this same spirit lives in all of us. The spirit often remains dormant until something wakes it up. We live asleep until something or someone comes along and says, “There is more to this life than you can imagine.”

This spirit, this life force, or whatever you want to call it, is often awakened prematurely. Or it’s directed incorrectly. Most, if not all people want to experience love. Love in it’s simplest form is self-love. Most people can love themselves and are capable of love.

However, this is not what we long. Human beings long something more. C.S. Lewis describes this love as recipitory. This is why we humans are social. We crave the love and acceptance of others.

Many people go about obtaining this the wrong way. Whether it’s through a relationship, service, or simply being who everybody wants you to be.

The challenge, it seems, is to be who you are and be accepted completely, 100% of you.
