uh…oh….windows bound
After about three days of intensive research, one hardware test, and much needed prayer, I decided to get an iPod.
I wanted to make sure it would work for linux. And it does, for the most part. But unfortunately, iTunes does NOT. And anything I buy of off iTunes would not be playable on linux without breaking the DMCA.
So, the end result is turning one of my servers into a Windows XP box…*shudders*. That’s right. I’ll actually be using a computer with it’s intended operating system.
It does scare me a bit. Because now it means I’ll have to dust up on my windows know-how. All for an iPod.
Apple just needs to come out with a Linux version.

ew… you don’t have to use iTunes to upload on an ipod you know. I think winamp 5.0 has an extension that lets you upload files onto an iPod… and from what I have heard they may be raising the price of more recent music by $.50.
I dunno how helpful i could be with further information though – i have XP and OSX which both support itunes, and also have little to get an ipod right now…
well, yeah, because you got an iBook.
Do you know if the winamp plugin would work for xmms? If so, assuming winamp isn’t circumventing the DMCA, I could use it with xmms.
for one, it’s a mac mini
other than that… I don’t believe you are doing anything illegal in using a different player than iTunes. From what I understand DMCA is only about keeping free distribution of media from being legal. If you purchase an iTunes song you should be allowed to play it on any player that supports it. If there’s a problem with that it’s the media player company that would get sued, not you.
But then again, copyright law in general has become such a bloated and complex idea now, that I don’t think there’s any hope in following it to the letter.
xmms is the same general thing as winamp (give or take…) so maybe it’ll work. again, you’d have to look into it.
